Do I Need to Install Riser Pads on My Skateboard? (5 Situations Where You Might)

April 26, 2023

If you're new to skateboarding or upgrading your setup, you may wonder if you need to install riser pads on your skateboard. The answer depends on several factors, including your riding style, weight, and the terrain you skate on.

In this article, we list some of the most common situations where you might need riser pads to help you determine if they're right for you.

1)If you're into flip tricks or skating street, you don't necessarily need riser pads.

2)If you're into skating transition (quarterpipe, mini-ramp, pool, vert), you also don't need risers.

3)However, if you perform tricks with high impact, angled risers can help prevent your deck from breaking. If you skate transition or have a lot of "pop," trucks with a higher base might be a better option than risers.

4)On the other hand, if you experience wheel bite or ride on rough terrain, riser pads can make your ride smoother and prevent accidents.

5)Additionally, if you're a heavier rider, riser pads can help distribute your weight more evenly and reduce stress on your deck.

6)If your wheels are over 56mm, you can consider installing a skateboard riser pad, otherwise, the wheels are easy to bite; from our experience, it is recommended to install 1/8 inch riser pads when using 56-58mm wheels, use 59- Install 1/4" riser pads in case of 60mm wheels. And don't take the 1/2-inch riser pad lightly.

In conclusion, whether you need to install riser pads on your skateboard depends on your individual needs and preferences. If you're unsure, try riding without them first and see how it feels. If you experience any problems like wheel bite or excessive vibration, you can then consider adding riser pads. Ultimately, the decision is up to you and what feels most comfortable for your riding style.
